The modern pictures of Chernobyl haunt me, too. It was one of the first current events I wrote about as a student.
My husband's science teacher in Germany was invited to take a visit a few years after the event to see the "recovery." The Russians had machines at entry that indicated radiation levels. On the way out, the teacher noticed they were unplugged. He died in his 40s, a few years after this visit. It was bad.
