A Movie Confession....

Dec 11, 2009 11:40

I have a confession to make. I'm an HP fan, but I'm not necessarily an HP movie fan. In fact, some of you may consider it a sacrilege, but I haven't seen any of the HP movies since Goblet of Fire. Oh, I've seen clips here and there, but a full movie? No. When Order of the Phoenix was released, I'd intended to go, but I just never got around to ( Read more... )

While I do adore Rickman!Snape's voice, and that has influenced my Snape... he is too old, bless him. That and my Snape does not have lovehandles.

I do enjoy the movies, but at the same time I do hate the mess they can make of canon, the latest two especially.

*shudders* I hope they somehow manage to make Snape!death ambiguous. But even if they don't, Rickman!Snape is not my Snape. Maybe if I repeat that enough it won't matter when they mangle his not-death?

Movie canon does seem to be cropping up more and more. I read a fic recently where it made mention of Hermione seeing Bellatrix AK Sirius in OotP *facepalm* When in the real book canon, Hermione has of course been Dolohov'd into next week and I seem to recall Bella used a red spell on Sirius to curtain him...

I hope so, too, but I'm not holding out a lot of faith on any ambiguity. ~sighs~ But I like your "that's not my Snape" attitude toward the "not-death". LOL I think it's perfect.

I'd have to look up the red spell because I don't specifically recall it at the moment, but I do remember that Harry saw Sirius go through the veil with a look of surprise on Sirius' face. But there's just no way that Hermione saw any of that. As you pointed out, Dolohov had knocked her completely out of the action by then. ~sighs~

I see the films as a visual form of fanfic. Some are good, some aren't.

My imaginary Snape is Daniel Day Lewis with Rickman's voice. Odd, I know. Although, every now an then Jeremy Brett will slip in to the mental image.

I liked much about OotP film. I thought the Ministry as a sort of 1984/1939 Totalitarian set was spot on. And then there was Lucius in Leather, cannot touch that for eye-candy.

I've seen some of the deleted scenes from HBP and think they should have kept them. However, did think the "Stairway to Heaven" rock-concert lift the glowy wand thing at the end was just silly.

Not sure if I'll see the last film because the book was soooooo poorly done. Plus, I cannot imagine sitting through 5+ hours of camping.

Usually when I go see movies of books, I try to ignore the source material in favor of speculating on what the visual fanfic will give me.

That's an excellent way of categorizing them! Thank you!

Hee! Not so odd, actually. Mine is a taller Tim Roth with more of a Rickman-ish voice.

I should really watch it for that, alone. LOL

They've got to cut that camping down. ~shakes head~ That just will not work if they're going to hold people's attentions in a movie theater. Hell, people were skimming in the books!

Ooooh, you're just full of wonderful ideas, Miss Lil! I need to go to the movies with
you ( ... )

Wow, I know exactly what you mean. Granted, when the first two movies came out (and those kids were so tiny and cute!) I DID watch them, but nowadays it just seems like too much of a hassle.

Yes! That's it exactly; they were so little and cute. I could forgive a lack of acting ability on the cute factor alone.

it just seems to be missing that element that makes you read as fast as you can to get to the next page.

~nods~ Which, in a way, may be the fault of the books. It's difficult to maintain a certain level of tension when you already know before you even set foot in the theater which characters will survive and which won't.

I'm here with you! I thought the first two HP movies were fine, but after that... ugh. After POA, I only watched movies 4 and 5 out of a sense of obligation, a "support the fandom" feeling; my HP DVDs are gathering dust. I will rent HBP or buy a used copy from the local video store. I dread the last two movies, esp the Cruciatus scene that will likely involve horrible screaming and acting from Emma Watson; I was disappointed that she didn't quit the movie franchise. Movie-Ron has made me absolutely detest the character even more than the book.

Jason Isaac's Lucius is fab, and Draco is rather good too. I think younger Rickman would have been fine, or at least a Rickman with better wigs and makeup. He looked slimmer and better in Sweeney Todd.

While I respect Kenneth Branagh immensely, I thought Hugh Grant would have been better as Gilderoy.

That's why I've bought the dvds, out of a sense of supporting the fandom. (Even though I guess I'm really only supporting Warner Brothers. ~rolls eyes~)

Movie-Ron is stupid, and book-Ron is not. Or at least, book-Ron doesn't begin stupid. There was so much potential there to use as him as the trio's tactician, but he became increasingly more stupid and annoying the longer JKR wrote him.

I agree. While I like Branaugh and enjoy his other work, he wasn't even close to the Lockhart that I'd imagined.

I love the books and I like the films, but I view them as separate entities since the films tend to ignore vital plot points.
"My" Potterverse is based on the books not on the films, with the notable exception of Jason Isaacs's Lucius, who I completely adore. He's just perfect. I like Rickman!Snape, too. He has a great voice and some really good moments in the films, though my image of Snape was shaped, again, more by the books. Emma Watson isn't my Hermione. I have a completely different image of that character.

I'm not sure I'll watch the two DH films. There'll probably be even more trio than in HBP, endless camping, and I fear they'll make it very clear that Snape dies. Which of course is wrong because we know that he was saved in time ;D

Oh, Jason Isaacs' Lucius is the only one I see now. ~grin~

I think if I could completely separate the books and movies as you and a few others have done, I'd be much happier. It's just difficult for me to do, and I don't know why. Some part of my brain keeps trying to fill in with things that would be there in the books, and it becomes frustrating after a while.

Oh, the endless camping. That was torture to read in the books; I hope they don't try to translate that to the screen.

And yes, Snape was saved in time! Everybody around here knows that. ;)
