Welllll that depends on whether I like the backstory or not. If I don't, then I agree with the poster.

And if I don't, then I agree with you.

Oooooh, my position changes quicker than a Malfoy in a threesome whose just seen a mirror

And it does deserve fic.

Oooh, off to read, then. ~grin~

Looks at comment and scratches head. How peculiar.

I'm baffled by readers who expect explanations for everything. Think people. Use the brain the universe gave you.

It is peculiar, isn't it? ~shakes head~ I think some readers expect things to match the fanon they've developed and are shocked when it doesn't.

Yep. I know I have my own mental idea of Snape, et al, but that doesn't mean I'm closed for other interpretations. ~ahem~ Within reason that is. I do have some pet peeves that may or may not stop me from reading.

Me, too. And if the comment had been presented as "oh, geez, really not to my taste" instead of "oh, geez, that's wrong," I wouldn't have had nearly the problem.

There are an awful lot of lazy readers/viewers out there who whine when things aren't exactly the way they expect them to be, even if their expectations are as absurd as the ones you describe. On the bright side, if your writing manages to annoy those sorts of people, it means that you're bright and original enough not to fit in their happy fanon boxes, which, IMHO can only be a good thing. All reviews are good reviews, even those from anonymous trolls who have an aversion to kink but read threesome stories anyway.

It wasn't my review, but I agree with you one hundred percent. It's just frustrating to see people let their fanon expectations stop them from enjoying a story. ~shrug~

Given how excellent your work is, it's only a matter of time ;)

Awww. ~blushes~ Thank you! You're right, though, it's only a matter of time. I've been flamed (although that was personal and had nothing to do with the story), but sooner or later, someone is going to go, "Ew! Bad characterization!" It's an inevitability in fandom, I think.

People are so, so strange. If you don't like it, write something yourself, dangit!

I hear you on the computer thing. My motherboard fried back in November and it's just now getting replaced. I miiiiiisss it. We have hubby's laptop, but I miss MY computer.

~snicker~ Isn't that the truth?

Oh, yes. I had a borrowed computer, and it was lovely to have something, but I missed my computer dreadfully. ~hugs it again~

I have to scoff at people who tell me my characterization is "wrong" (please note big air quotes). ORLY? I'm sorry, are your initials JKR?

I received a review for Grimmauld Nocturna, an explicitly labelled horror piece, telling me that my characterization wasn't consistent. I'm sorry, wasn't consistent with what? Your characterization? JKR's Characterization? My typical characterization?

See, these are the reviews that make me crazy...

Yep. I'm surprised that someone would tell you that you had the characterization as inconsistent. It was perfectly consistent within the framework of the story, and considering the obsessive tendencies we know that character to have, I think it was perfectly consistent within the framework of the original works. ~nods~

The nice thing about fandom is that we have leeway to play with the characters. I've seen everything from a doting, romantic Severus to vitriolic bastard Severus. The framework is what allows us to play. And I'm the author. I'm the one who makes those decisions.

Now if I'd written him as best buddies with Lockhart, then you can call me out on being OOC, but inconsistent? WTF?

And getting back to your point, fanon = / = canon. SRSLY.

Exactly! I enjoy Snape in a range of characterizations, so it seems odd to me that people limit themselves to just one.

Now if I'd written him as best buddies with Lockhart, then you can call me out on being OOC, but inconsistent? WTF?

You know, I've even seen Snape/Lockhart done well. Although, the relationship developed after the canon ended. It was in Potio by Seeker.
