Prologue: Runaway

He ran and ran, eyes darting wildly as he tried to recall the way back to the tunnel opening. The body he carried on his back only served to hinder him further, but he firmly refused to put it down until they had reached safety.

He could still feel the blood slowly seeping through his friend’s shirt and into his own, viscous and still warm.

“Hold on,” he whispered, a slight frantic edge seeping into his voice. “We’re nearly there. The medic kit’s there, I can fix you up.”

A grunt.

“Don’t bother,” his friend rasped, still conscious enough to be aware of the world despite the amount of blood he had already lost. “I’m a dead man, Kei.”

“Ssh! No names, remember? We’re still out in the open.”

Slipping out from the shadow of the alley, he turned a corner and spotted a manhole cover in a dead end. Innocuous to most, but to him it was escape, a doorway to freedom.

Being careful not to jostle the body he was carrying, he descended down the ladder, before yanking the manhole cover shut and collapsing the portable ladder.

The medical kit was taken out from the motorcycle quickly, and its contents analysed.

“We seem to be running out of bandages,” Kei growled. “Damn.”

He was about to rip the bottom half of his shirt to use as makeshift bandages, but a hand on his arm stopped him.

“Don’t,” his friend whispered. “I’m dying, Kei. You don’t live after a round of bullets to the stomach, especially not these new-fangled ones Central seems to have come up with…”

Kei paused, then looked away, a frown forming on his face.

“I can’t even heal you,” he muttered. “What good are these powers if I can’t use them to save my friends?”

A light touch on his arm, and he turned back to see his friend shaking his head.

“Don’t lose yourself to despair, remember. Whatever you do.”

Kei grinned wryly.

“I knew that, Masaru. Don’t waste your deathbed advice on something that all sensible people know.”

Smiling thinly, his friend let his hand drop, and blinked slowly a couple of times.

“Since I’m dying, there’s no need for that alias anymore, is there?” he joked weakly. “Kenichi - that’s my real name. Matsuyama Kenichi.”

“Macchan,” Kei nodded, and Kenichi nodded, looking satisfied.

“Macchan…I like the sound of that.”

They both fell silent for a while, before Kenichi broke the silence again.

“Find a partner soon, Kei. Get to Salem city.”

Kei nodded.

“I will,” he promised.

Letting out a soft sigh, Kenichi turned his head to face the ceiling of the dimly-lit tunnel.

“Goodbye, Kei,” he breathed. “I’m glad we could be partners, hm?”

He exhaled, and then his eyes glazed over as his body went slack.
