On more than one occasion when I was an undergraduate, I got cross with people saying how much nicer Oxford is without the students. Now the boot is on the other foot, and I have to say I agree with them. Man, am I pleased that I don't have to coexist with cyclists armed with megaphones.

Rowing coaches would much prefer to be on the water in a launch too, but there's too many rowers for that to work, which is why that's the method that's banned on the Isis.

Getting rid of megaphones wouldn't be a bad thing - people tend to use them badly, too loudly and too early in the morning. And probably most coaches don't use one.

That said most of the accidents I've seen on the towpath have involved one of the following:
a) a bicycle self-dismantling
b) a cyclist managing to fall off with no outside assistance
c) a cyclist managing to cycle into the river
all of which are the cyclists fault and not something for the pedestrian to worry about.

In addition, most of the quietness on the river will be at least partly due to the fact that the river has been too high for college rowers for about 3 weeks, if not longer.

Even when I was an undergraduate I suspected it was nicer without students. You've got sunshine, too. Lucky, lucky, lucky.
