The bark on the tree looks similar to certain oak trees, doesn't it? Especially the Valley Oak/California White Oak (Quercus lobata). However, it's actually a camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora). We have them throughout my townhouse complex. They produce small black berries for most of the year, which the squirrels love -- along with the fruits and nuts of many other trees here. :)
Camphors are considered evergreen because they never drop their soft, shiny leaves all at once. However, they tend to drop the most in spring! That's because the trees make the most new leaves in spring, which push the old leaves off. The new leaves emerge as a beautiful pinkish-red, and later change to yellowish-green. If you crush the leaves in your hand, they release the smell of camphor.
But don't let me start talking about trees! (heehee)
