Am I being alarmist? Or is this a possible "Doomsday Switch"?

This is exactly NOT the type of agitating thing I should read before bedtime! :( Stupid Shari.

I just read an online article about the Large Hadron Collider, which will begin "test runs" (ha! more like playing a "test" Russian Roulette game!) later this summer. It's located in Switzerland and is basically the largest and most powerful atomic and ( Read more... )

I forgot about the string theory. I agree with you there -- it would be fascinating if this new particle collider could prove that. :) The existence of other dimensions would be exciting as well, although I don't quite understand that. I mean, I understand what they said in the article, but I can't wrap my mind around what that would mean concretely. All i can think of is the stereotypical concent in sci-fi books and movies, where people accidentally (or on purpose) find themselves experiencing life in "another dimension ( ... )

I don't think that the danger is much to worry about (Stephen Hawking weighed in on it, and he basically said it should be fine - and Stephen Hawking is like, The World's Smartest Man), but I do agree that that money could have been used for more useful things (all the examples you mentioned). Honestly, I'm sure this is great for all the science types and everything, but for me, personally, I could give two shits about black matter whosiwhassis when I have things like unemployment and no working vehicle on my mind.

Frankly, I think the world is in FAR more danger of being destroyed via a certain politician we both know and hate, heh.

You're right about the "endorsement" of Stephen Hawking. I felt less nervous when I read that he thinks the collider is safe from the various dangers that alarmists are afraid of. Hawking is probably the most brilliant physicist (if that's the right term) since Einstein, so I trust his opinions more than I trust some people's "facts"! heh ( ... )
