Have all states and/or phone companies discontinued the ability to call up the time?

I just asked this on Yahoo Answers, but there's no harm in asking here as well. You can click here to read it on Yahoo Answers and see what the people there had to say, but I want to record it here in my journal too.

According to this Wikipedia entry, what I'm ( Read more... )

I live in eastern KY, and we just call the main bank at the town that is the county seat. They give time and weather.

I'd actually found out about that a few weeks ago! I was bored and looking up wikipedia when I stumbled onto the "speaking clock" page. I was so shocked that it was being discontinued. =\

Today my astronomy teacher was talking about how punctual we all have to be (hahaha) and told us to synchronize our watches to popcorn. I raised my hand and told him it didn't exist anymore, and his eyes widened and he said, "There, that's the end of civilization as we know it!"

It amused me. *grin*

I guess now we all have to synchronize our watches to our cellphones, since the cellphones automatically set themselves based on the atomic clock signal coming from Colorado. Or so I've heard. :) I can't imagine how ELSE cellphones could set themselves so precisely.

BTW, you might want to tell your prof that some states and regions still have an ability to call the time. If you follow the link to my question on Yahoo Answers, you'll see. I don't know what that says about civilization, tho, since most of those places are fairly rural. (sabneraznik's comment above also being an example of this). heh

I still feel bad about Popcorn going away. :(
