title: Pay No Mind with: Mac/Danny rated: PG herein: five wrongs - “Outside Man” post-ep disclaim: me no own note: Yes I’ve already done one like this, but I think this one’s better. Maybe.
*Oh*. Gorgeous, and it hurts, and the pervasive sense of sorrow just hit me right in the chest. It's so perfectly Mac that he makes a conscious decision to ignore the pain Danny is in, and to just carry on as if that's not happening. And the sense of just taking the step off the edge of the cliff because he can, because ultimately it's easier, is just as perfect and just as hurtful.
My other favorite bits: Mac steeling himself against Danny's smile (both times), and Mac takes a deep breath and wonders if this is how Danny feels all the time.
Thank you. Mac's just so pleased when he goes to tell Danny he's on the promotion grid, and he doesn't *want* Danny to hurt right now (and he doesn't want to hurt right now himself) so if he can only ignore it all....
Y'know, I've written very little S1, and though this and the Tanglewood post ep gave me a ton of grief, I'm really very glad I claimed Mac/Danny for five wrongs. (like, i'm going to have to write something longer about what their initial winter together was like.) As I was telling Gin, there's a weird way in which I suspect this 'verse could be my equivalent of your coastalverse... I mean, here in particular they're playing a lot of the denial game...but it's more of a passive hurt than the active hurt they're causing themselves in damageverse.
oh, back to good ole days of pain and misunderstanding. this was beautiful, and there's a real sense of not-quite-awkwardness between them. like they still don't really know each other at this point in the game, they can't really read each other, and they're doing this for all the wrong reasons. which is exactly like mac/danny circa season one.
OMG. I. LOVE. THIS. and you. Are you trying to steal my attention from Stel?
They're sad, but they're not... And Mac's so scared....
And it makes sense for something like that of such significance to be a real quiet happening. Mac's famed toughness falling like a house of cards.
Mac takes a deep breath and wonders if this is how Danny feels all the time.
I loved this. Why? Cause Danny's world is this crazy, on the edge technicolor experience that Mac (and we) can't always quite get. Danny feels so deeply, and wears his heart on his sleeve that we can only watch him turn into a trainwreck. Mac feels deeply, but is better at hiding it.
Thank you. Mac is terribly scared and avoiding a lot of things here, but I really like the idea of getting them together this early in S1 and seeing what happens. I'm glad you like it... I suspect this might be my equivalent of Stel's costalverse in that... well, they're doing a lot of the Denial thing in particular and they're not yet particularly in sync with each other, but they're still not actively sabotaging things.

Thank you. And yeah--this is deeply *risky* in Mac's world, and his attempt to rationalize going home with Danny is perilously close to Danny's usual impulsiveness. This sort of "what the hell" response.
I am kinda of the opinion that canon could be 2 ways-- that they either hooked up post RSRD, or that they have been on again-off again since the beginning.
they're not yet particularly in sync with each other, but they're still not actively sabotaging things.
I much prefer them that way, actually. Things don't have to be happy perfect, but I deal with enough sabotage and self-destruction in my OWN life, I don't need it with the boys.
Mac's so much more of a thinker than Danny. Not that Danny's dumb or anything, but honestly he needs 'impulsive little boy' tattooed on his forehead at times.
