for your consideration

Like I said Friday, I had a little writers' retreat this weekend up in the north Georgia mountains. I got about 2400 words of a new original short story written yesterday, which is good.

There's one thing about the weekend, though, that's stuck in my craw.

Honestly, if you went on a writers' retreat with eight other people, would you expect that ( Read more... )

wtf?, query

Yeah, I mean, on the one hand the goal was to separate time from your everyday life specifically for writingl. On the other hand, that it didn't come up at least once? I feel like I need to be a part of a writerly community, and the way that happens for me is to talk about writing, even on as basic a level as "I'm liking this scene, but this character's giving me grief."

I would think that that would be the main topic of conversation.

When surrounded by writers, wouldn't you want to talk about it? I mean, I normally find it so hard to find people to talk about writing with and who, even of they let me talk, actually care all that much.

I find it rather bizare that they didn't talk about writing.

Exactly. Right now I need to feel like I'm a part of a writerly community--that's a large part of why I go to the writers' group in the first place--but how I feel that way is by sitting around and talking about writing. I mean, even something as simple as "this is what I'm working on and this part's going well but this part's giving me grief."

I know I'm in a different place than most (if not all) the people in the group, but I still thought we'd at least talk about what we were working on, even informally.

Hilariously, I am the person who said "no" in the poll -- shows you what I know about writing.
Send me an email and let me know how all else is going!

Well, one of the things that has me pissed off is that all of the times we talked about what we would do that weekend, Elizabeth (who organizes our group) said that Saturday evening we'd get back together and have the opportunity to share what we were working on with the group if we wanted to. She even said that Saturday morning, and then it was never mentioned again.

I also expected the subject to come up on it's own, if only in passing, like "this is what I'm working on, and I'm excited about it" or "it's giving me grief," etc.
