I was listening to music, but I turned it off, so I'm listening to the rain hitting my window, and the pavement outside.

This is lovely, and it hurts. It just fucking hurts.

Thank you. I'd had the first couple hundred words sitting around for weeks, not sure what to do with it, then the rest kind of tumbled out of me Sunday afternoon. I'm surprisingly proud of how it turned out.

Oh, this is just perfect. Like your Stella/Hawkes story from a couple of days ago, this just digs right down to the good, hurty place, where it's terribly painful to read, but it *is* also good, because it captures the characters so perfectly, as well as that raw kind of emotional honesty.

What really gets to me here is what they talk about -- that Mac doesn't know why tonight things started to overwhelm him, and Flack understands why he doesn't know. Because that's the way it is, really: you go along and go along, and you're okay, you're okay...until that one day when you're not. And this so perfectly captures the bonds of loyalty and brotherhood and fellowsoldiers.

Also, in light of the scenes between Mac and Flack in "You Only Die Once"? Very apropos.

Thank you. I felt very prescient watching the ep. :)

Like I think I told you, most of this story just poured out on Sunday afternoon and felt *right* as it happened. I'm really intrigued by the evolving dynamic between Mac and Flack because there's that level of brotherhood between them, but it's not always easy. I'm glad you think it captures the characters well, because I did have my doubts. It's difficult to write Mac so... out of control in this way. Plus, I have a tendency to write Flack with a rather high level of understanding... which feels right to me but I couldn't say why. I thought about pinning Mac's hurt to a specific event, thought about explaining it in some way, but it felt more important to let it stand, because that kind of weariness doesn't necessarily make sense.

This is beautiful. A perfect snapshot of Flack and Mac. You have captured it all: Mac's intensity and his need for control even when he's trying to escape from it, Flack's understanding of where Mac is and what he's doing, as well as his knowledge that he doesn't really know Mac at all... Very nicely done. I love that you manage to capture both these very masculine characters and give them emotions that ring true to who they are. I also love that, as is Mac's wont, we only see his emotions from the outside.

I can see this as something that really happened to the characters. My bet is that Mac will remember everything, but he will never say anything, giving Flack one more mystery to wonder about.

Thank you. I imagine that Mac will indeed remember (enough if not all of it), but would rather pretend it never happened--let alone that Flack might have witnessed any of it. But Flack is one of the most perfect people to have witnessed it, of course, because he is who you want to have your back, whatever the circumstances.
