I had to write something last night, but the spook-me story wasn’t happening. Me and Hawkes got to talking, and it was unspeakably nice to write something without having to fight for it tooth and nail. Oh, *Hawkes*. Hawkes desperately needs a hug. And he's so *quiet* in his hurt, too - not that it's any less real or any less deep, but that he tries so hard to bury it and to not let it affect his work or the people around him. And it feels like this is just what happens to anyone who gets too closely involved with Mac, which may be even sadder.

like his lungs are made of cardboard that’s been folded over too many times.

That's a great image.

Thank you. Yes, he's very contained, because likes to keep his composure so, which makes him, in his own way, as removed from things as Mac.

And it feels like this is just what happens to anyone who gets too closely involved with Mac, which may be even sadder.

Yes. Yes, and thank you because I think I knew that on some level but hadn't *thought* it, and now that you've said it there is Hawkes/Stella. I don't think Hawkes expected it to end and to hurt because he's not much of a pessimist, but he's not terribly surprised that it did.

You made me intrigued because I like Hawke. This was very believable, him having to hide how he felt. Great story.
