So I talked to the vet. She asked me a lot of pointed questions about what had me worried and about what Spanky's routines are. She was kind and thoughtful and helpful. He's got a lot going on physically. But if he gets up and moves around deliberately with obvious goals in mind (even if he does these things slowly), if he still shows an interest in food (even if somewhat diminished), if he still does things he likes to do (like deliberately moving to a patch of sun on the floor), and still asks for attention, then he's probably doing okay, all other things considered. Which means that, while I shouldn't worry, I should relax my guard a bit and just enjoy his company for a while more.

I wish your vet had talked to my wife on about, say, January 28th. She wasn't sold on the "awhile more" end of things for me back then, either. It turned out well enough for us, and while Spanky has a theoretically shorter span than I do the best advice I can give is what you have been given: enjoy what you have. And if you want to go out to tea, or something, just let us know.
