World's Fair of Money, Day 4--end of con, start of sight-seeing

Aug 17, 2010 22:46

By Saturday morning, I was actually a little tired of the convention. I was beginning to be aware of how much the trip was costing me purely in required spending (i.e., meals and incidentals) even without having spent all that much money on the bourse--and since the budget was tight, it was hard to enjoy the bourse without much in the way of ( Read more... )

I have really tender feet. I can totally relate. Blisters can really sour an experience.

Hope your feet feel better soon.

Thanks. I'm still babying them. I'm hoping they'll be better by the end of the week...when I may be camping...and hiking....

Walking all day, even in the best shoes, can give blisters. I have scars from my NYC trip with Austin because I refused to yield to my feet complaining. And my shoes were good!

I've come to learn one trick is to switch between shoes. It give your feet a break. Now I bring several pair of comfy shoes, and switch away. It made a HUGE difference in SF where we walked as much, if not more, than in NYC.

Hey, you'll get no argument from me about foot kvetchery. As a teacher I know how important taking care of your feet can be, and after last year's capsulitis I am obsessive about it. If a shoe hurts my foot or gives me blisters, it's off the list. If it makes me slip or fall, it's gone. Life's too short to keep bad shoes around.

If I can find it (don't know if it's in the safe deposit box, around the house, or if one of my siblings has it) I have a coin to show you the next time you're in PDX. We found it in a batch of gravel my folks got while we were living on the farm near Springfield (so it was local to the Eugene area). A Spanish coin, with a big cross, several other crosses, and an inscription. Edges chopped, but it survived the gravel-making chopper reasonably well. I don't think it has much if any value, but it's an interesting piece, at least to me (I'm not a collector but I do have a couple of interesting coins)

"I ended up only smashing two pennies in all of Boston but, having resigned myself to my mistake, I don't feel bad about it in the end. I'll be back there sometime."

Yay! But if you ever need a penny smashed in Boston, let us know.

Before I blundered my way into financial hard times, I scored a couple of ancient coins that I am very pleased to own: an Athenian owl and a Byzantine solidus. I should show them to you some time; I'm sure you'd enjoy seeing them.

I've wanted an Athenian owl for years but they always end up far beyond my means. Instead, I go to coin shows and stare at them. :-)
