Forgive my ignorance... but what in the world do they have to protest at Comic-Con?

In sum: Comic books are idolatry. Comics fans worship Batman more than they worship Jesus. And so on.

Odds are pretty good that it is more like "Not all comic books and comic book fans explicitly state that gays are going to burn in hell for all eternity, and are destroying America."
