Notes in the wake of a brief LJ hiatus

Haven't posted in a couple of days. A lot has been going on at Chez scarlettina externally, far more internally, some of which won't get written about. But here's the stuff I do want to write about.

"The Last Polar Bear" at the Burke Museum
The Burke--the natural history museum on the UW campus--has mounted a photography exhibit called "The Last Polar Bear," ( Read more... )

"just for fun B" resonates with a link provided by andrewducker:

About an ultra orthodox rabbi black listing non-Kosher music. Although I think Rush doesn't even enter into his picture.

I agree with the "doesn't have to" theory. If she were in any way a reasonable candidate, he or Biden would be all over her. But the things she has going on right now are better off being reported by the media, over and over again, from multiple sources. If he were to take the lead on any of it, the McCain campaign would have a field day spinning it into "Dems beat up on Little Orphan Annie," but this way they can't. By the time they comment--like, at the debates--Palin's shortcomings will be firmly established and exhaustively documented, not to mention letting her and her family become more deeply embroiled in legal issues.

I haven't been upset by this or anything, but I've been wondering why Barack Obama hasn't been slamming back harder at the Republicans.

I heard a good analogy describing the two candidates the other day: McCain is a craps player and Obama is a poker player. The campaign will react, and they have a ridiculous amount of money to do so. I'm guessing that the Obama campaign was pretty surprised by the Palin choice and the repercussions. I have no doubt that he's thinking about his next move very, very carefully. Also, it's usually a safe bet to give McCain time to say something stupid-he's about due for another gaffe.

I don't suppose you knew that I've been gathering nice bookcase designs for years in case we get enough cash together to buy some nice wood? How'd you like a nice Craftsman D-handled bookcase done up? Or, if you're feeling flush, how about a rotating one like those Amy T. has?

So, two things about this: 1) I'm unemployed, so money is at a premium right now. 2) Do you have a picture of what a "Craftsman D-handled bookcase" looks like?

Strictly speaking it's a Stickley #74 book rack. You may need something that can hold a little more, however. As you can see the design is very simple, and the main expense would involve the quality of wood you want to use ( ... )
