I wouldn't mind seeing you post your SFWA paragraph at sfwa.

I appreciate the thought, but I know for a fact I'd get drawn into a debate there. :-) It just seems so simple to me. I don't know why no one else is standing up and saying these things. Like I said: It's so in vogue to bash the organzation. We're such a community of socially awkward people; maybe no one wants to not be part of the cool crowd.

No promises. We'll see. I should go over there and see what's been hapening lately. It's on my flist, but I've been woefully behind.

You could always post, then ignore any debate. Or post in a way that disallows comments.

If you post, I'll give you a nice shiny nickel. :-)

a nice shiny nickel

Perhaps pennies rather than nickels. And there should be smashing involved. Either you, her, the nickel, the pennies, or any combination should be smashed for the transaction.

Trying to travel to alternate universes in daily life should be limited to doing it on the page. I make this mistake once every (wait, let me check) 15-17 years or so and I need to stop it. (Was that sufficiently obscure?)

Oh really? What the Hell do they have you on?

You don't want to know. Trust me.

If your new workspace has natural light, you may find you prefer it. Counterintuitive, I know, but Favorite Client has rows of desks with no cubicles, and it feels so light and airy, it's nice to have sightlines and not feel like I'm shut up in a grey little cell. I vastly prefer open-plan to cubicles now.

Natural light? I wish. Natural light is too good for the likes of contingent staffers like myself.

OK, silly me. I thought all those campus style buildings had windows, but I guess there are private offices blocking them off from where they stuck you.

Basically, they're moving me into a converted conference room in the middle of the building, sharing space with about 7-8 other people. These facilities have been overcrowded literally for years, and yet they keep putting off the move to the new offices they already have lined up. Rather silly.

Re: SFWA: Absolutely! I'm tempted to go over there, myself, and write such. But you're right about the Prickasaurus Rexes out there (I've met a few by posting there!) as well as the vast majority who have nothing kind or supportive to say.

I almost quit SFWA about seven years ago when the new administration came in and - without vote - canceled the project I'd been working on with several others. But I realized that the same vast majority had nothing to do with it and stuck in there.

RE: the new room: Huh. Is the idea that you'll now be better able to collaborate? Are you trying to, y'know, write or edit there? Or is it all about the meetings?

Prickasaurus Rexes: ::chuckle::

Regarding the office move: My bosses were moved to that building last week, so I'm being moved to be closer to where they are. Beyond that, there's no reason for this. I work with none of the other people in the room. In fact, I'm guessing--based purely on a quick scan of the room--that none of these people are content folk like myself. It's...it's...it's bleh.

Regarding SFWA; Apparently mabfan is offering a shiny nickel to me to post my comments about it (see above). You might get a shiny nickel if you step up. Just sayin'. :-)

Oh, no; I've learned my lesson when I posted something positive. Just imagine how those same P-Rs were to feel challenged. I'll let you have that fun.

I've pointed a number of people who write stuff other than science fiction to the SFWA web site for their scam-avoidance advice. It's the best around, as far as I'm aware. Applause to them.

Anyway, time to head to the polls. I'm still torn on the roads and transit issue, but it's time to decide.
