There is no such thing. There are semi-automatic firearms (in a variety of styles: handgun, carbine, rifle, shotgun, grenade launcher). There are machine guns, which, while they may be capable of semi-automatic fire, are designed for full-automatic fire. These are almost invariably rifles, although I have seen a full-auto grenade launcher, a military-only piece.
Incidentally, the private ownership of full-automatic weapons has been Federally-regulated to a fare-thee-well (read: extremely difficult to achieve the necessary permits) since somewhere in the region of 1935.
I'm not going to argue your opinion -- your playground, your ball, your opinion -- but you'll be more convincing to others you wish to persuade if you get the terminology right.

And just to put some of this in perspective, a friend taught me to shoot a handgun several years back (I believe it was a Sig Sauer 9 mm) at a range on the East Side and I did get a kick out of it. We went back to the range several times together and I was a pretty good shot. I enjoyed it a little too much. But . . . no guns in my house. And I'd prefer it if there were fewer guns, regardless of type, generally available in the US.
