Damn! It was news to me as well ;>. Not all of the First Doctor made it over here -- it wasn't till Doctor #3 they even started *keeping* the films/tapes. A lot of the material from the first 2 doctors is stuff fans had kept as the BBC didn't see any need in archiving "a children's show" -- or so the story goes :>.
The first doctor stuff is largely preserved, the second Doctor is mostly lost to history (notable exception: Tomb of the Cybermen is a great popcorn muncher).
My favorite bit of weirdness around this: We still have audio recordings of the second doctor ONLY because some enterprising fans thought it would be a good idea to put a flippin' TAPE DECK in front of their TV to record the audio later.
I was never aware that the Beatles were on Doctor Who though, I guess I should check that out.
That's from the serial titled "The Chase," a largely comic, over-the-top story featuring the Daleks in their own TARDIS-like time machine pursuing the Doctor.
"The story also features The Beatles in a film clip. See also Celebrity appearances in Doctor Who. It was originally planned for the band to appear as themselves, but under heavy 'aging' make-up, to represent themselves in the future; but their schedules conflicted. Thus, footage from the BBC pop music music chart programme Top of the Pops was used instead. Ironically, considering the number of lost Doctor Who episodes, this is the only surviving clip of the Beatles from Top of the Pops."
Hey, I'll be a pro fan when they let me write an episode. Or appear in one. I do believe I deserve some sort of co-writing credit for "The Shakespeare Code" ::g::, which you'll be seeing here Sunday evening.

Its Wikipedia entry has this bit of triviata:
