West Wing, Doctor Who

Here's my TV blogging for the weekend. There may be more TV blogging after tomorrow night's premiere of Ghost Hunters.

The West Wing: Welcome to Wherever You Are: Sunday night's was a fast-moving episode but pretty superficial, very much a John Wells creation. Even as I watched it, I found myself thinking, "He's trying to be Robert Altman: all the ( Read more... )

I was wondering if they clipped scenes on SciFi. Not surprising. (grrr)

Dickens' fussy reluctance was quite adorable, I thought. :-)

I caught the second wolf mention from Gwyneth. Where was the first one? (Note: being a newbie to this show, I've no idea what the wolf thing is all about other than it's important and I should pay attention!)

Re: Bad Wolf mention

Yes, but you have to very attentive - the Face of Boe makes as bit of background dialoge in "The End of the World".

Re: clippage: As has been rather forcefully pointed out to me in the drwho_america forum, where people seem to be awfully prickly (although that seems to be true everywhere on LJ the last couple of days), clippage is necessary to provide for commercials. It's still, says I, a pain in the ass. Careless clippage removes important character bits like the one I mentioned, and is supremely irritating. But that's me.

oldmangrumpus is right: The Face of Boe makes a remark about a Bad Wolf Scenario. It's fleeting and you don't notice it unless you're paying careful attention (or you know to pay careful attention). But it comes back later. I shan't spoil it for you.

But we shouldn't need that much clippage. The typical length of a Doctor Who episode is around 44-45 minutes, the same as a typical network show. If they're clipping, they're doing so to add only one extra commercial, which seems odd given that they could just cut out a promo or two.

You're in luck. SCI-FI's bagged the Stargate Sandwich programing (the Doctor had been sandwiched between two Stargates) and is running the previous week's at 8:00. So you get two hours of the Doctor.

And if you still can't wait, looks like it's being run at 1 in the morning tomorrow.

This Friday? If so, I'm so there.

I've changed my incoming mail sound to the TARDIS materialization sound here at work.

Blast! I *knew* there was something missing. Have to buy the bloody disks when they come out after all, eh?

:>

I loved the Dickens piece from the beginning -- but I love the actor that played Dickens and that sold me right off. The moments between Eccleston and Piper are beautiful -- they really work quite well together.

My only problem iwth Eccleston is that he bailed after a year. Bad Doctor. No Cookie.

Do what I did: Order them from Amazon.ca. The Canadian prices should give you enough of a break that you won't feel the shipping costs.

My only problem iwth Eccleston is that he bailed after a year.

Well, look at it from his perspective: He already had a pretty respectable career as an actor. And every actor who'd played the Doctor before him got painted with so broad a brush that getting other parts was pretty difficult afterward. I think he figured he'd quit after he developed the name recognition but before he got so solidly typecast that it would be impossible for him to do other work. Sad as I was to see him go, I totally understand it. And by classic series standards, he's stayed for two seasons, since back then a season was only six episodes. I miss him, but he's got my support in the end.

That Wikipedia isn't bad and it does warn for spoilage, bless its geeky little heart. You mayu also want to play over here where you'll experience the mystery, but you may also trip over spoilers unwittingly. I leave it up to you.
