SIFF: Saved from the Flames

A program of some of the earliest silent films, Saved from the Flames was hosted by film archivist Serge Bromberg, an entertaining and knowledgeable Frenchman who founded Lobster Films, which preserves the silents as they're found. BTW, Flicker Alley just announced that they are streaming both the color and black-and-white versions of "A Trip to the Moon" at Netflix now, although I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I think it's so cool that they found the old color version.

I understand that Gertie the Dinosaur was intended to be shown with a live performer on the stage who "interacted" with Gertie by, for example, throwing her an apple. Did this showing include any of that?

YES! He brought with him a whip and a watermelon rather than an apple. And there was audience participation as well, coaxing Gertie out of her cave. It was completely delightful.

Very cool! I've seen snippets of Gertie, but never a performance of the whole film.
