Release the kraken: on awards, puppies and politics

So, all those who care know that the Hugo Awards nominees list for this year was released yesterday at noon Pacific time. Like the kraken, it has unleashed its power upon the fannish waves. I've been thinking about this, and you're right, Surridge's article is very incisive, and it made me think about a perfectly good word for this, that's fallen out of favor:

Reactionary.

When you are from a position of privilege arguing against measures that would improve the lot of those less privilege, you acting in reaction. You have be reactionary against change. And Suffidge points that out quite well.

It's really a remarkable piece of work. Next year? Slate or no slate, he's getting one of my votes for Best Fan Writer. He's smart and thoughtful and principled, and this work alone is worth recognition.
