So this past weekend was Potlatch. It was also the 10th Annual Science Fiction & Fantasy Short Film Festival. Being the sort that likes having her cake and eating it, too, I arranged to attend the convention on Friday evening and Saturday, and then the festival recap on Sunday ( Read more... )

Youth Flying Its Flag sounds like a band name. And thanks for making me feel better about missing the 4pm panel on Saturday!

I got the impression that akirlu wasn't too happy with the way the panel was redirected either, though I don't know for certain. I was just really looking forward to the discussion I thought we were going to have. I'm sorry that we didn't. I feel like it was a real missed opportunity.

Actually, I thought the panel was interesting and well done for the kind of thing it eventually became, and I thought you did very well rolling with the changes and were interesting and informative talking about publishing. I don't think it was a *bad* panel per se, but if I had it to do over I probably would have considered a different moderator. I think I have to own a good chunk of the blame for having rewritten the panel substantially from its initial conception and not having drawn the moderator more forcefully to attend to what the topic had refocused to. I think he was more fixated on Ursula's talk than the challenge I'd posed for it.

I agree that he was focused on her talk, which was appropriate, but I think he was focused on the wrong part of the talk. I don't think that Ursula's message was that self-publishing is the answer to Big Publishing, but the mod clearly had an agenda. Either that, or it was a question of reading comprehension. I think the description of the panel was pretty clear. But even when I called him on it--you were there--he just wouldn't address it.

Eh, probably a good thing that I wasn't there. I fear that Middle School Teacher mode might have arisen around Youth Flying Its Flag if they were too strident and Sarcasm Might Have Appeared.

OTOH, when writing in a coffee shop with another old lady friend, we had a nice chuckle when eavesdropping on An Earnest Reedie Couple deconstructing SF and Fantasy. As Other Lady commented, we forget how intense young adult emotions and opinions can be, before the shadings of nuance fueled by experience arrive. Of course, he was also doing a wee bit of mansplaining to show off. Good for her that she quietly but effectively countered him. But he was rather loud.

Funny how we perceive youth. The youth I was referring to was actually 30 but he presented as about 19. And he was very sure of himself indeed in an area that the rest of his conversation seemed to indicate he was still pretty unfamiliar with. It's all about perspective.
