Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Saw this play last night at Seattle Repertory Theater with ebourne. I figured that since I'd never seen it--not even the Burton/Taylor film--and since it's Albee, I really ought to; it was a hole in my theatrical education. The script is amazing and the performances were all brilliant--courageous, full-throated, completely exposed. It was perhaps one of ( Read more... )

When I was living in WI, my friend Cindi and I drove down to Chicago see it. It's one of her favorite plays. I was impressed; good cast, cozy theater, great performance. And I agree with you--horrible characters, not nice people at all, wouldn't want to see it again.

I'm actually the same way about comedies where it's just a string of bad things happening to someone as a buildup to the conclusion: I just don't like seeing bad things happen to people.

I certainly understand your feeling about that type of comedy. I aviod them, too. This idea that it's entertaining to watch people beat up on each other, no matter how light-heartedly, is just kind of repellent to me. The older I get, the harder it is for me to take such things. But I guess kindness isn't entertaining.

I can see how it might be played as a comedy. There was certainly some levity in the performance I saw. It's in delivery, timing, physical performance--and it sure as hell lightened up things a bit. But in the end, it's a downer, with material difficult as hell to portray. All these people walk away from this night beaten up, broken and exposed.

I, too, would be curious about Stewart's performance, having seen him live on stage twice now: A Christmas Carol (his one-man show) and Waiting for Godot. He's never boring live, that's for sure.

Regarding your tattoo, I have one just like it, only on the palm of my right hand. :-)
