Five Things in the Autumn Darkness

1) I've been watching Sleepy Hollow, and it occurred to me to post about it mainly because terri_osborne has been squeeing about it. I think I'm digging the concept of the show more than I am the show itself. I'll be sticking with the show for now, but I really hope they find a way to add a little more substance somewhere because there's something that's still ( Read more... )

I empathize with the 'it's hard to do'.

I haven't watched more than the pilot of SH, though I intend to get caught up, but your concerns occurred to me even as I was watching the first ep; he was way too acclimated and accepting way too fast.

Because the bus takes twice as long and there's a transfer?

Even as anti-car and pro-bus as I am, there are still plenty of times I drive, especially if there's a transfer involved.

Actually, I don't have a transfer. I catch the 13 two blocks from my house, get off at Pine and 3rd, and walk up to 9th. I'd resent the walk more if I didn't need the exercise as much as I do. I think what puts me off is my having to deal with people--and the allergy attacks I always get when I sit in a bus with badly filtered air and the miasma of cigarette smoke and hair spray that people unfailingly drag along with them.

What I'm enjoying about Sleepy Hollow is how thoroughly committed they are to the most ridiculous dialogue and situations. That sells it for me. Plus, I think Ichabod's faking a lot of his acclimation - there was a great bit in this week's episode where he was clearly pretending to understand a word that he didn't, and that made me think a lot of his comfort was bravado.

Re. the bus commute: maybe it's because you're less in control? When you drive, you decide when to leave (within reason, of course), what route to take, how fast you go, how many times if any that you stop. With a bus, you're at the mercy of the driver for all those things. On the upside, you can read or nap a bit if your bus trip is long enough - can't do that while driving!

On the exercise front, I really believe the best way to do it and stick with it is to do something you really want to do. Preferably inside, since we live here.

Good luck getting it all sorted.
