Five Things for the First Saturday in January

1) twilight2000 held her annual white elephant gift exchange last night. The company, as usual, was quite fine. The gift exchange was, as usual, entertaining. I came home with the lemon of the evening, a doll so ugly that it will not pass "Go" or collect $200; it will go directly to Goodwill. But I'm the only person I know who can go to a White Elephant party ( Read more... )

I understand about the housework. I just made a list of errands to do today. I feel good crossing stuff off.

Might I suggest this website/tumblr:

She provides encouragement and suggestions for how to get stuff done.

Perhaps her recommendation of 20/10 would help you: 20 minutes of work followed by ten minutes of relaxing.

Now I must go take care of the cat box and run the errands.

Good referral. Now I'm off to deal with the pile wrapping paper and ribbon that needs organized.

This getting-work-done-in-increments idea isn't a new one to me, but the specific reminder was a huge help to me. Thank you!

I found the Big Bang Theory essay interesting -- I completely agree with some of his points and disagree on others. Yes, the show is homophobic in that disappointing mainstream way that so many things still are. And yes, its treatment of female characters and nerd sexuality is very problematic. But I thought the show was worse on that score in its first season, and actually improved, as it started to acknowledge that there were girl nerds, and that nerds are, actually, capable of mating successfully, and do it all the time ( ... )

My mother calls cats at that stage - Henry being a case in point - as 'kattens.'

That's an interesting essay, but overall I can't agree with it. Penny is mocked just as much as the "nerd" characters are. And their culture -- both the intellectual and the fannish parts -- are presented with an accuracy that, IMO, bespeaks a lot of love. Certainly the character I identify with most is Leonard -- bright but not the brightest; often funny but not the funniest; not asexual but also not particularly confident or successful in romance. And Sheldon, although he's often the butt of jokes, is also protected and admired by his friends, and on occasion he's even heroic.

I'll be very interested to see what you have to say about the show!

Tell you what: if you want I'll come over and do your to-do list if you do mine. I'll even throw in fixing your upstairs lamp, or replacing it if you go to the lamp store with me. Deal?
