The weekend so far

Nov 11, 2012 07:50

Left for Portland at about 10:30 Friday morning and had excellent weather for the drive. By noon I was in Centralia, where I stopped to pick up a couple of things at the outlet mall (which, I have decided, does not actually offer much in the way of bargains but is still, somehow, fun) and lunch. I picked up pajamas of the correct size (all of mine ( Read more... )

I grew up with the Indigo Girls. I knew Amy and Emily back in high school. Emily's dad played the music for my wedding.

In college before they had signed their first record deal, after we were done with either rehearsal or a show we would go to where ever they were playing.

I still own their first single and their first album.

I did Godspell with them and Jesus Christ Superstar with Amy as Jesus.

So I think I am technically one of the oldest fans of their work.

Would have loved to have seen them with a full orchestra.

I liked Cloud Atlas a lot--it is, as you say, flawed, but interesting, and some of it was just wonderfully done. I particularly liked Jim Broadbent as the jovial composer with a heart of razor blades, but then, I like Jim Broadbent an awful lot.

Possible spoiler alert::
No really.

Cloud Atlas left me thinking, 'pretty but lacking substance.' I did enjoy Hugh Grant as face painted, cannibalistic, killer. I mean really, Hugh Grant? And the obvious Soylent Green joke sort of ruined the reveal.

The Girls are a favorite of mine. I first saw them outside on a sunny California day slowly turning to a magical evening long long ago.. Must have been great to see them with the symphony.

Happy trails.

For me "Cloud Atlas" wasn't lacking substance. I think its size and ambition has people looking for deeper meaning than anyone may have intended. It's about love and interconnectedness, and it doesn't really have to be deeper than that. I think the movie-goers these days tend to confuse ambition with an intention toward profundity, but one does not require the other. As for the Soylent Green joke, well, it works for some and not for others.

You put a bird on it because you're in Portland!!

Amy Ash and I were discussing Cloud Atlas, and discovering we had the same reaction - we both wanted to see it because we both wanted to know what the #*(@ was going on here....

It may be too romantic in the classic sense for your tastes, but I'll be curious to hear your reaction to it when you see it.
