I was, indeed, at the Amsterdam Hermitage when it opened--15 minutes before, in fact, and was the first person in the door. Clearly the hotelier had an eye for choice goods, but on a personal note I'm happy he wasn't mere persuasive--you'd be missed.

Amsterdam makes its own argument, no persuasive hotelier needed. (Besides, he was significantly not my type--but somehow always the type that goes for me: older and from a completely different world. I am consistently baffled by this phenomenon.) But have no fear: I'm not planning on abandoning the North American continent any time soon. There's too much here to entertain.

This was a wonderful report. I have never loved Van Gogh, but your writing made me see him in a different light entirely. I do, however, love sunflowers (Girasole is sunflower in Italian) and your description of your reaction is very very fine. Thank you.
