skidspoppe and I rose early on Thursday to catch an 8:08 AM train back to Vilnius. Did I mention how good it was to see him after such a long time? Five years is a long time not to see a friend. I must introduce you to a friend who is on the UK fan scene, but has been working in art galleries in Lithuania for some years. It sounds lovely - I've never been to L, but have been teaching a Lithuanian in the UK for the last 6 months. Great bloke, from Kaunas, now living in Birmingham. It sounds like a most interesting country.

I'm finding the country much more charming and intriguing than, frankly, I expected to. It's been such a wonderful surprise. Today, especially, was great--but I may not get to blog about it for another day or two. My journal entries are lagging by about two days. I'll try to catch up, one way or another.

All the parts of the former SU that I've visited have been a blast, and the people are generally lovely. C seems to have really enjoyed Lithuania.

"What occurred to me as I read all this history--about Lithuania's one and only king, and then its line of Grand Dukes--is that I was reading about it for the first time, all this history I didn't learn about in school. We're not taught Eastern European history in American schools, so this was all a revelation to me."

Can't say I know all that much about Lithuania, but if you want more information or eddication about Eastern European history (the Balkans Edition) just call me...

(And I am vicariously LOVING travelling old Europe hanging onto your coattails...)

A web search shows no place to get kibinai in Seattle, but I did find several restaurants with Cornish/Irish pasties, which is nice.
