Obviously, I haven't seen the film, but as an American living in a post soviet country, I can say it's pretty easy to get yourself involved in things of which you know little to nothing about. I, myself haven't (mostly because I'm apathetic and older and know how to walk away) but I've seen it happen with friends and colleagues.
