Is there a defining Stargate fic?

I've slid in and out of a lot of fandoms over the years.  Farscape, BSG, Alias, Babylon 5, Buffy, Firefly, and lots of others.  In my experience they all had what I would call a "defining fic" (even though I don't necessarily remember what they all were!).  A story that had seemingly been read by everyone because it was simply that good, that ( Read more... )

i don't think so. not now

10 years ago, maybe. or if there is one it'd be an old one, before fic got filled with digs and slights and insider jokes. there was likely a team fic that wasn't all pre-slash/smarm in disguise and wasn't all shippy either

but now the fandom is so divided that i think hte best you could do is a 'top 5 must read' for each character/pairing

having used to read slash fic, now reading ship fic, they literally see the show differently. I've watched the different groups take a singular scene and see it in such different ways it's like they're not even seeing the same show

Hi there! I found your LJ by following... huh. Not sure, really.

Anyway, a question like this is dear to my heart because I am just an eensy bit obsessed with SG-1 fic reccing. As in, 500 and counting since April 2006. :)

Because I am a gen girl, the stories I read tend to be acceptable to a wider crowd of people, because readers can choose to find whatever context they want. Het/slash take that option away - while those that prefer a specific pairing might click that link more eagerly and are more likely to leave reviews, those that don't like that pairing won't bother to read it. Gen, on the other hand, is open to everyone. I am judging this by seeing who comments and enjoys the fics I rec, and they tend to be from all corners of the fandom.

All those corners mean there can't be really be defining fic. LJ vs archives vs forums vs mailing lists... And then there's that yawning ship divide, with gen people like me valiantly trying to walk the narrow rope bridge in the middle. :)

That said, here are a few fics that deserve to be ( ... )

Quite the list there!

Thanks!

I'd read a few of these but most of them are new to me. Must now binge on fic...
