Prompt Immortal glory
He's not on a quest.
Let's be clear about that. He is not travelling the wastes of the Earth in search of his soul on a sodding quest. He is not seeking a Grail, an ideal of perfectibility, a holy item to save the world, some immortal glory. He is not seeking a new land of heroes, founded for the future of humanity. Or demonity. Whatever.
There may be trials three that face him, the mystical trinity of numbers starring in every legendary test from the judgment of Paris onwards. The trials may be held without light against fire and water and creeping bugs that bring the evil of earth into every cell, combining the four elements in enmity against his goal.
But Spike's not on a quest. He's a bad, evil man. He's allowed to be selfish. Not everything in life is a quest.
All he's trying to save is himself. And all he's saving himself from is ever hurting her again. Because that, he cannot live with.
