title: Crystal Clear
pairing: Krystal/Amber
summary: there was something about amber, something about the way she says krystal
a/n: so erm this isn't my usual fandom but I had a sudden inspiration to try it and it's really short and stuff. I like the way it turned out and I didn't want to continue it because it ended nicely that way. YES OKAY I SHALL STOP RAMBLING.
Krystal loves the way Amber calls her name.
“Krystal.”
She always manages to say it with a particular ring to it, and Krystal wasn’t really sure why it was so. Perhaps it was the way she says it - crystal clear, all puns intended. Perhaps it was the contrast with the Korean pronunciation of it. Khyristaal. That was the way most people pronounced her way. When she first came to Korea, the enunciation made her uncomfortable. She got used to it (no she didn’t) but it wasn’t her name that they were calling. You aren’t really you when your name was changed. She was back home, but she wasn’t quite there yet.
Krystal.
She still remembers the first they met. “This is Amber.” Her older sister brought her around on her very first day at the company. She, Jessica, was set to debut anyday soon, and it was Jessica’s wish to see Krystal up on the stage as well, making a name for herself. Krystal wasn’t very much bothered with being famous. The showbiz industry did not attract her, she was only in this for her sister who persuaded her to give it a shot.
“This is Amber.”
Jessica had been very excited, gushing to Krystal about how she had met this Chinese girl who spoke “brilliant English.” And that Krystal would “absolutely love her, you’ll see, and you need a friend anyway, you’ve not been yourself since we moved to Korea.”
“Amber, this is Krystal. Remember I told you about her? Help me bring her around the place, it’s her first day here.”
Her sister continues animatedly for half a minute more, explaining to Krystal about how Amber had been a trainee for nearly a year, and how she would definitely feel comfortable around her because the language barrier wasn’t there. Krystal barely listens, eyes darting around the practice room, mirrors reflecting back her lost eyes.
Jessica creates an excuse about having to practice and makes her exit, unaware of Krystal’s unvoiced protests.
And then there were only two left, with space big enough to fit the rest of the world. To Krystal, at least.
“Krystal. With a ‘K’ right?” The girl, Amber, asks her. Krystal nods mutely, her left hand wrapped around herself in defence. In defence to what exactly, she wasn’t sure.
The girl, Amber, smiles. It wasn’t an obvious smile, it was the kind that showed in the eyes. A smile that lights up her deep brown eyes, illuminating the turmoil of emotions and for a moment, Krystal thought that she was staring at a mirror. For right in front of her stood someone who recognised the loss she felt. Here was someone else who was also stuck in a foreign place called Home.
“It’s pretty,” Amber smiles and Krystal lets her arm down.
“Soojung,” Krystal repeats it once more, this time a little louder. It was still barely above a whisper though and it sounded more like a confession than an answer to a simple question.
“Nah, Krystal’s still prettier,” Amber decides with a definitive nod.
Krystal bites her lips in fear that her face would crack under the terrifying scale of the smile. But Amber sees the ghost of a smile sparkling in her eyes.
