Summary (if drabble): It's supposed to be Lily and James' first real Valentine's Day together - but it isn't. Sirius Black's quest to make it all okay for Lily...
Author's Note: Elena, you are one of the most amazing authors I've ever read and an even better person. I hope you like reading this as much as I liked writing it! *glomps* Have a great Valentine's Day!
Neglected
Sirius Black, unlike his many companions, had no opinion whatsoever towards Valentine's Day. He didn't hate it, like Peter Pettigrew, nor did he look forward to the bleak February day like the supercilious girls in Gryffindor house. It was all the same to him. If he were ever asked why exactly he held this opinion, he wouldn't have been able to say. Deep down, of course, he knew exactly what his problem was: while he was in love with the most beautiful and delightful girl, she did not love him back. She had a boyfriend, for Godric's sake, whom everyone knew she would marry straight out of Hogwarts. Anyone could see on the lovebirds' faces how deeply and truly in love they were. Sirius could see it, too, and his heart ached and his teeth clenched together in anger at seeing them together - coupled of course with that burning knowledge, that he couldn't do anything about it. James Potter was his best friend, of course. Leave it to Lily Evans to fall in love with Sirius Black's best friend.
This was why Sirius had opted out of the yearly Hogsmeade trip on Valentine's Day. He wouldn't have been able to stand seeing all the happy couples roaming the streets, he couldn't watch them - he couldn't watch James, and Lily. And so, for the first time refusing to find a Valentine, he took to lounging and lazing about the castle, as usual having no real purpose in his life or this monumental day. Monumental. This is their first bloody Valentine's Day, he reminded himself as he circled the lake, kicking stones around in frustration. They deserve this day.
"Sirius?"
He raised his head in curiosity and disbelief; he was sure his ears had misled him. Not her - what was she doing here of all places? It was midmorning, and she and James ought to have been long gone by now!
"Lily," he greeted her dolefully, hardly able to look her in the eye, "shouldn't you be… somewhere?"
"Shouldn't I be shagging him or something?" She laughed, and Sirius darkly wondered if she had done that yet or not.
"Something like that, yeah," he muttered, trying very hard to erase that image from the back of his mind, and trying very hard to ignore the feeling erupting within him at the sight of her alone.
"I'm Head Girl, Sirius," she sighed wistfully, "Sometimes you have to sacrifice your own happiness for the whole, you know?"
"Yes," he said curtly - he knew too well what sacrifice meant. "But you have to give up on James?"
"There's never any time for us," she answered, somewhat evasively. "And… well, I needed to talk to you."
"Oh?" He was more curious now than ever… to feel her skin against his…
"Yeah. It's about… about James… and me." Lily spoke haltingly, awkwardly, blushing as she averted her eyes from him.
"Go on, then," Sirius said encouragingly, though secretly wishing she wouldn't subject him to giving advice about her relationship with her best friend.
"Well. Sirius, I… I love James, but… but…" She was steeling herself up for something, but what? "But it doesn't feel the same. He… he's always gone off somewhere for Quidditch or Dumbledore and it feels like… like he's neglecting me or something, but that can't be, can it?" She was breathing heavily and blinking rapidly, and Sirius watched her in concern.
"He's not neglecting you, Lily," he said automatically. "He'd never do that to you. He loves you."
"How can he?" she whispered, looking close to tears. "He… even you know it's Valentine's Day, you know?"
His brow furrowed in deep thought and shock. "James - he hasn't said anything to you? Nothing at all?"
She shook her head, her auburn hair swinging gracefully in the wind. "Nothing at all," she echoed, hugging herself as if there was no one else to care for her on this day of all days.
"That's ridiculous, Lily," he breathed, allowing his subconscious and heart to take over. "Lily, he's being… being difficult. He has something planned for you - something he hasn't told me, admittedly, but I'll be he has something planned for you."
She grinned up at him, a radiant, natural smile that made Sirius' heart flutter wildly. "And how do you know that?" she asked cheekily. "What, do you have something planned for some special girl?"
The innocent, yet somehow flirtatious inquiry set Sirius' mind working in devilishly mischievous ways. "I might," he whispered.
And when he pulled Lily toward him for a sweet kiss, he was amazed at how soft her lips were, even when she was kissing him back.
