Aw, shoot! Fess Parker died today. There goes another little piece of my childhood! Man, he was great as Davy Crockett & Daniel Boone. I just loved those old shows!

Some of my earliest childhood memories are sitting in our tree in the backyard pretending I was in the wilderness with my coonskin cap.

Oh yes, he made me read all about Daniel Boone and I cried myself to sleep when I found out Irael died young in real life. Have you ever heard Stephen Bishop's version of the "Ballad of Davy Crockett" (Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the Wild frontier)?

My brother and I both had coon skin caps and he had the toy gun, this tall rifle longer than he was! Our relatives came to Tennessee with Davy. Every one of the party named a county after themselves - except for our rellie, dear Reuben who named his for the guy that died on the way to west Tennessee, Mr Weakley! I guess he must have been truly weakly and lived up or rather died - due to his name!

He was an icon in my childhood story-watching, too. Davey Crocket, Daniel Boone, Old Yeller (he was a the dad). Look at him in that photo; Buddy Ebsen and he look so young and in their prime.

That's sad. All the old guard are dropping off the earth and it makes me so depressed.
