I really enjoyed reading this review! Yukiatsu has grown to be my favorite character as well, and I believe your analysis is spot on aside from your opinion on Tsuruko.

The last scene was so touching. I teared up and cried several times throughout this show. ;__; The directors/writers/whomever really did an exceptional job in pulling the heartstrings of the audience. BUT I WISHED THERE WAS A MORE CLEARER BG STORY ON TSURUKO AND POPPO. They're more in the background while Yukiatsu, Anaru, Jintan, and of course Menma appear onscreen.

I guess I'm not alone in seeing how amazing the hands were drawn in this anime? xD

somebody actually went through the effort of reading this! Yay ^^
I don't know, I guess my opinion on Tsuruko would have been different had she not been pushed aside and a bit neglected by the creators, like you said. If I ever rewatch, I'll try giving her another chance, but something about her just bugs me.

It's so embarrassing but I think I already cried in the first episode.
I've noticed the series has been getting a lot of positive attention, and I think it deserves it. I don't think it was exaggarated at all, and I like how it seems everything was there for a reason, nothing was really redundant.

I wouldn't neccessarily say they were drawn amazingly, but I definitely think the shots and close-ups of hands were done very well and added a lot to the atmosphere.
once again, thank you so much for reading!

Great review. I tend to more or less agree with your review aside from Tsuruko ( ... )

very good point on her being 'the writers' mouthpiece', I never looked at it that way but now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense. Even in episode 1, when she tells Yukiatsu "Even you change when you talk about Meiko Honma", she start providing insight. She will continue doing this later on, whether it's insight for the audience or the characters themselves, (i.e. exposing 'fake' Menma's identity to the group). She does indeed catalyse character developement as well in a few future occasions ( ... )

Loved the analysis! ext_6312508 April 17 2023, 19:29:40 UTC
It's 2023, and I'm not sure if you can see this, but I just watched Anohana for the first time. To say it struck a chord is an understatement. I did not cry during the series, but it would have been better if I did. I don't think I can bring myself to watch it again for some time.

That said, I agree with most of your analysis, bar the Tsuruko part. Yukiatsu is my favorite character and the one I most relate to, but I see bits of myself in Tsuruko as well. That facade of calm and "objectivity"? Fits me to a tee. I think her intellect is searing, and she's a very good reader of people.

I actually don't think Anaru and Yukiatsu make a good pairing, but that's a different story. There was a "10 Years Later" reading in 2021 and that was really nice. For the first time ever, the characters are where I expected them to be. Anaru and Jintan are together, and so are Tsuruko and Yukiatsu.

It's a 10/10 for me, and I'm glad you noticed how the expressive the characters were with the tears and their hands. Thank you.
