To fix my car...

It will take $865 to make my car pass inspection, with more repairs looming on the horizon. There's a problem with the transmission that I can't let go for too much longer, but I want to try to stretch it out until I get my bonus check. My bushings don't need to be replaced quite yet, but they'll need it soon enough ( Read more... )

I probably have no right to be saying this because I don't know much of anything about your financial situation. But if it were me, with a car needing that much work to pass inspection, I'd ditch the thing. In fact, that's pretty much why I've got my new car, now. I forget how much it was going to cost to pass inspection with my CR-V, but it was a bundle. And what with the economy being the way it is, I was able to get a new car loan for a Honda Fit at a really good rate, and my car payment is only... what is it... $50 more than my old one was (my other car wasn't paid off yet). Some of the smaller cars on the market now are really good deals, especially if you get them pretty stripped down (Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Honda Civic). And the smaller ones get great gas mileage. My Fit can get over 30 on the highway. It's great! And if you can get a Honda Civic used or a Toyota Echo or Camry? They should also be good bets. I have no idea if you could swing a car payment or not right now (I'm assuming you're not paying on your current car). ( ... )

I am paying on my current car... $165 per month. I've only had it for a year and I still owe about $5000 on it. The problems it has are mostly normal wear and tear (brakes, tires, bulbs that need to be replaced)... so I'm not ready to give it up quite yet. By this time next year, I'll probably be in the market for another vehicle.
