[Here comes Mikaela, dropped in the park not far off and looking for all the world like she does this every day. As soon as the 'hopper disappears, she lets her hair out of its high ponytail and pulls a compact mirror out of her purse, checking her makeup and the fall of the waves quickly. Satisfied that nothing's horribly out of place, she puts the mirror away and looks around.
Whoop, is that orange hair over there? That's gotta be him. She strides in the kid's direction, waving.]
Yeah, exactly! [Her laugh was louder this time, and she was grinning again.] I don't think I'll be able to look at an engine the same way now, having, like, had one. Not that it's a bad thing or anything.
[That made her only grin wider, and sit up a little straighter on her stool.] Why thank you, Ichigo~
[Oblivious Berry is oblivious. Sorry Mikaela, but you just get another smile before he eats a little more ramen.
Chewing thoughtfully for a moment, then a frown to go with the next question.]
So what are your plans for summer then? Er...if you have any?
[Honestly this small talk is just Ichigo trying to get to know Mikaela a little, since she's always been friendly to him online. He hasn't forgotten about showing her Zangetsu, but now that he knew she's a poor, deprived child, it didn't seem good form to get into the "spooky stuff" right off the bat.
....Plus, to Ichigo, Mikaela was interesting to talk to, and they apparently were good at making each other laugh?]
[She'll take a smile, that's better than nothing! Takes the opportunity to have a bit more of her own, which is disappearing faster than she would have thought.]
Plans? Oh, not much. Get to the beach as much as possible, I guess. Find some cool fireworks on the Fourth of July to watch. That'd be nice!
[She's rather enjoying sitting here, just talking. Most of the guys who ever bought her lunch had gotten skeevy by this point, except Sam, but she wasn't going to think about Sam right now, oh no.]
[Slight frown at the reference to 'the fourth', but otherwise Ichigo gives her an almost wistful smile. He missed summer...back when summers were normal.]

[She pauses for a sip of Calpico, then looks a little sheepish when she continues.] I don't think I even know where we are right now, other than in Japan, right?
Oh! Jeeze, sorry! Yeah, you're in Karakura town. The closest major city is Tokyo, but it's not that close.
[Ichigo shrugged. He's lived in this small town his whole life. He's gone to the land of the dead ( Soul Society ) but it wasn't until he joined the comm that he ever went to America...granted it was a Nevada desert once, and the alleyway behind Maggie's apartment plus several other worlds while he was a hollow, but that was all.]
I've heard Los Angeles is a really big city, though. Did you like growing up there?
[Finishing off his ramen in three big mouthfuls , though he'll happily talk if Mikaela isn't quite finished with her's.]
Oh, cool! [She looks around again, taking in the sights as if trying to see how a Japanese small town is different from an American one. She turns her attention back to him soon enough, though, nodding.]
It is, yeah. 'M lucky, we live in this little suburb on the edge of it, which is nice. The crowds aren't as bad, but it's still easy to get downtown.
It was really nice, actually. Like the best of both worlds, you know?
[She smiles at him.] What about you, did you grow up here? [Pops a bite into her mouth.]
[In some ways it was very different; fewer cars, since more people meant more use of public transit, bikes, scooters, or simply walking. Being a small town meant it was largely residential areas, with all the things ( stores, schools, etc ) that homes, and families needed.]
Yeah, I grew up here. My old man runs a clinic, and my sisters, and I live above that.
[He shrugged. Really, it was nice to talk like normal people, and even better that Mikaela wasn't more interested in the shinigami, or Ichigo as a shinigami. Refreshing.]

[She'd already noticed that there seemed to be more people out and about on foot or bikes, but other than that, it mostly seemed familiar--or so her cursory examination had informed her. It definitely wasn't terrifyingly weird or different or anything.]

[Yes, there were...wait a second. Ichigo, having usually been one to be somewhat oblivious to his surroundings, now noticed that the usual shopping, or park-going crowds...were suspiciously thinning? Frowning, he looked around for a moment, before realizing Mikaela had asked him a question.]
Huh? Oh, it's just a general clinic. Mostly meant for people in the neighborhood, or those who don't need to go to hospital. My old man gets a lot of families, and stuff. Kids with colds, or older people who need a doctor closer to where they live. That sort of thing.
[The sudden mass exodus was disturbing to Ichigo, but only because he knew that the average human, while largely unaware of the spirit world, still possessed animal instincts; meaning that when something bad was in the area, like hollows, or arrancar, people tended to clear it. It wasn't something they did consciously as a general rule, just a certain uneasiness that people avoided

( God bless Soul Society's detection equipment.) Used to be, only Rukia had one of these phones, and Ichigo couldn't go anywhere without her "just in case". Not that he minded hanging out with his best friend a lot, but being a shinigami? Rukia was kind of ignorant about human-world ways, and it got down right embarrassing to be in public with her sometimes.]

[Ichigo turned to her fully, now, as the badge started squawking faster. Whatever was keeping the hollow of Soul Society radars was keeping the other shinigami in town ignorant to it. It was only because

[Mikaela had no idea what was going on, but obviously something had just started happening. After all, that badge-thing had just started making noise, and Ichigo was suddenly looking very serious, and she knew enough to know that she'd better pay attention to him.
She listened--very carefully--and nodded to show that she understood. She still didn't really know what was going on and she was starting to get a little scared, but Ichigo has left her in the dubious security of a doorway with his phone in her hand before anything could really sink in, so she swallowed hard and muttered to herself:] Don't you dare fucking freak out.
[Biting her lip, she lifted the phone, staring at the little screen and sweeping it side-to-side slowly and freezing it when she found him again. She had to double-check to make sure her eyes weren't lying to her--nope, she definitely couldn't see him except for the phone.

[Unfortunately for both Mikaela, and Ichigo, the hollow decided to get the drop on them. Literally.
A shriek, made Ichigo whip around all of a sudden just in time to see the slug-like Hollow slash at the awning over Mikaela. Foul smelling, and reiatsu far worse feeling, the thing squealed at Mikaela from the edge of the doorway.
Cursing to himself, it was just a quick step of shunpo to have him blurring from nearly across the street, to being in between the Hollow, and Mikaela, with Zangetsu between his still-injured chest, and the Hollow's uneven teeth.
A solid kick that squished really unpleasantly under his waraji's heel, and the thing was propelled off the awning, and messily destroyed the ramen stand. Ichigo followed it with a leap, and a long downward sweep of Zangetsu which split the mask in two...
...Unfortunately, in death this particular hollow pretty much exploded in a shower of goo.

[As the awning over her head buckled, Mikaela let out a wholly involuntary shriek, pitching herself backwards as far as she could. It wasn't very far, unfortunately, and she found herself screaming back as the whatever-the-fuck-that-was squealed at her.
Fighting to keep the phone up, so she could actually see what was happening, Mikaela crouched down in the doorway, just trying to present as small a target as possible and stay out of Ichigo's way. This was almost worse than Mission City, if only because it was so close, and she couldn't even see what was going on except through the little tiny cell phone screen.
She didn't need to see the goo to feel it splatter all over her, though, and her expression crumpled into a disgusted frown.] Ew ew ew ew ew what the hell just happened?!
