One thing I can say for my parents (actually, I can say a lot of nice things): they never deceived me about this. They basically said that being an adult sucked because of all of those things and I should enjoy childhood while I can because eventually I'd have to pay my own bills.
I still vastly prefer adulthood because I can, to some extent, choose who I don't and do spend time with, which was the one choice I wanted as a child that I never got. I.e. I didn't want to spend time with people who constantly shot me down and took bites out of my self-esteem, like my parents did. As a kid I couldn't avoid it, but now if I find myself in a situation with one of them I can take steps to either mitigate it or get out of the situation.
This is a very good point and definitely true. There were a lot of people I didn't want to spend time with when I was a kid (i.e. my older brother) who didn't give me that choice.
I like the autonomy of adulthood but I admit to occasionally just wanting not to have to be responsible for anything except a handful of chores and my homework. I had an idyllic childhood (no really!) and I've made sort of a mess of my adult life (lol) but I still prefer being able to make my own decisions about life.

but you can blame that on my parents.
