Mainland Diner, Tuesday Afternoon

It was the same nondescript diner where she'd met Loki earlier in the month, and Sarah knew it well -- loved it a little, even, from the scuffed floors to the shiny rooms behind the scenes where the real deals went down. She ordered coffee and scanned the crowd idly as she sat waiting for Reno. Everyone seemed perfectly normal at a glance, but if ( Read more... )

Freelance work on the mainland? There was no way on Earth or Gaia that Reno was going to want to turn down an offer like that. The lack of details on the phone message that Sarah had left had made him raise an eyebrow somewhat, but... work was work, after all. And Reno had taken hundreds of assignments in the past without pesky things like details.

He stepped into the diner and had a look around. Yep. It was definitely a diner. Nothing was jumping out to kill him, which was good. He'd left his stun baton behind. Bad manners to bring a weapon to coffee, after all.

Satisfied that this didn't have some immediate sort of catch-22 laying in wait behind it, Reno sauntered over to Sarah's table and took a seat.

"Good day for workin'," he said, by way of greeting.

"If you're inside, at least," Sarah agreed neutrally, glancing out a window at the rain. "Thanks for meeting me here. It's just the kind of thing that seemed like it might be beyond your bosses."

"Anything that might occur near breakable items or people not wearin' souped-up armor is probably beyond my bosses," Reno mused, making a reach for a napkin and idly wringing a corner of his jacket off onto it. "Anyhow, the rain ain't all that bad. Cold. Wet. But not that bad. Tell me about this job?"

Sarah considered it, with a chuckle at his comment about Sam and Max. "In a second," she said. "Got any theories?"

And yes, that was a test. If he looked around, though, he'd notice most of the people in the diner were visibly in shape, a few of them had holster bulges ruining the lines of ill-fitting jackets or blouses, and almost everyone was a little too blandly good-looking, as if selected by central casting.
