He had been at Isabel's hut four days now. Peter wasn't any closer to remembering anything about his life than he was at the moment Isabel had found him wandering in the jungle. It was incredibly frustrating to not remember who he was, who he had been. Isabel tried to help him as best she could, but to no avail. Memories simply weren't coming, ( Read more... )

Nicholas Garrigan's reputation preceded him, and so in spite of never having met the man before, Gwen knows him the moment he introduces himself to her. Both Peter and Rob had related the story of his arrival to her after it had happened, and it feels surreal to have him standing beside her bed in the treehouse now, telling her about her husband. He says he can't be completely certain because of the way people look alike in this place, but he feels confident the man he's been helping is Peter, and even with the information about the amnesia, Gwen's so filled with relief and hope that she's crying from it, even though she'd felt certain she was cried out by now. Garrigan tells her where Peter's been staying, advises her to take some time to emotionally prepare herself before going to see him, and then leaves her in Rob's care. But Rob's gone now, and she can't wait any longer ( ... )

A dark-haired woman was walking in his direction down the path. Peter smiled politely at her, noticing with some concern that she seemed haggard and on edge. He was about to ask her if she needed help with something when she suddenly propelled herself at him. If it weren't for the woman's arms around him, holding him up, Peter would have fallen over from the force of the unexpected contact.

For a few moments he was too startled to say or do anything. The woman's breath was warm against the curve of his neck and her stomach, round and soft, was pressing against him.

She's pregnant, Peter realized first.

And then he remembered the ring on his finger and did the math.

Feeling as though the wind had just been knocked right out of him, Peter raised an awkward hand to rub her back soothingly, choking back an angry, frustrated sob at not being able to remember truly who this woman was.

"I thought- I thought-" Gwen attempts, her voice catching. "I thought you'd died," she manages to finish, and leans back to look at Peter, her cheeks streaked with tears. Her hands lift to reverently cradle his face. "They couldn't find you, and there were so many bodies..." Her voice dissolves into another series of relieved, little sobs, and she leans in to press a kiss to his mouth, tasting of saline.

"I'm not dead," Peter said simply, the words barely out before her mouth was against his. She tasted like tears and heartache and felt-- almost familiar, but the familiarity was ensconced in a heavy fog.

When they parted, Peter looked down at her, worry and chagrin visible in every line of his face. "How long have we been married?" he asked hesitantly, one hand on her waist for support.
