While the supernatural angle was downplayed, I do see a pattern to their references that might speak of explanation. Michael, for example.
That said, I don't want an explanation. Leaving key elements, key drivers out of the narrative forces me to pay closer attention, to suss out that which I may have missed. Only now that it is over (and I am reliving the series on DVD) do I see what I missed before, and see that it was intentional.
This I can accept in fiction. In life, not so much.
