Late, but not too late: Auctioning off a little fire for Dave

Oct 28, 2009 13:21

ETA:  This auction is now closed.  inaurolillium is the winner, with the high bid of $275.  Yay!

My intention was to post this yesterday, and I failed.  That's what happens when you agree to follow a friend whose nickname is Pan into an enchanted forest...

K' and I agreed on Monday evening that the most unique thing we could think of to do for Dave is to auction off an opportunity to be surrounded, safely and of your own free will, by fire.

In other words, this post is an auction for what could be a wonderful, exciting, life-changing experience.

Many folks on LJ already know that Kevin and I also perform with fire, in addition to my 6+ years of traveling the country singing songs to my friends for a living (said career saved from a screeching halt by the efforts of everyone who bid, signal-boosted, crafted, donated, bought CDs, and did various voodoo on my behalf when I had to have surgery back in January.  See saveours00j I love you all, and it's so good to be able to participate in this auction and this community).  One of the things we do best involves performing with fire in tandem, weaving flames around ourselves and each other with various props.  Occasionally, we will honor a third person by putting him/her in the center of our circle of fire.

You are bidding on the chance to have two insured, professional, highly talented and highly safety-conscious fire performers spin fire around you at a safe location, weather permitting, sometime in 2010 or 2011 - or, for a long-shot, late 2009.

The winner of this auction will receive a fire blessing like no other.

Some things to take into consideration:

1.  In order to give such a fire blessing safely, we need a bit of outdoor space.  Kevin and I are willing to help the winner of the auction locate such a space in his/her city, but each of you should take a few moments to go and read our safety requirements and information on our website.

2.  The date, time, and place for this act of joy and flame is entirely dependent on the weather and our existing tour schedule.  We cannot drive from Florida to Montana just to spin fire around you for ten minutes, as an example, unless we can schedule a whole string of concerts  on that route.  We will need the winner of the auction to work with us on setting a date for the fire blessing that works for all of us.  Weather:  Kevin and I have spun fire in the rain and the snow, but extreme wind or hail would likely make us have to try again another time.  Patience and understanding will be greatly rewarded.

3.  We may ask the winner's help in letting the local fire marshall know what we're up to, just so that there's no unnecessary unpleasantness in the middle of the magic.

4.  Sadly, we can only make this auction available to US residents.  (to go hang with Hawaii.  Alaska can come too.) That said, if anyone has tips on how to transport fire gear and fuel across international borders without much hassle, we will happily listen.

5.  We promise that we will do everything that we can to make certain that the winner of this auction comes to no physical harm during the fire blessing.  As part of this promise, no fire dancing will occur unless we have, at minimum, TWO trained fire safeties of our choice present, with all necessary safety gear.  Lastly, if you are the winner of this auction, you agree to be a sane human being who assumes certain risks associated with close proximity to fire, and that you will not file a lawsuit against Fire & Strings or any of its performers or safety personnel.  We will NOT touch you with the fire itself, or with hot metal props, if at all possible.

6.  We don't recommend this experience for anyone who suffers from epilepsy, or who has a legitimate fear of fire, or who might have unpleasant memories triggered by being close to open flame.  Also, you MUST NOT be intoxicated in any way, shape, or form when we spin fire around you.  This is not negotiable.  Lastly, for the night of the fire blessing, we recommend you wear a long-sleeved cotton shirt, denim jeans or cotton pants without any holes, rips, ragged edges or billow to them, and cover your hair with a cotton scarf.  You may also wear leather.

I'm going to start two comment threads:  one for bidding, and one for questions.  We'll start the bidding at $20.  This auction will end at Noon EST on November 2nd, 2009, because I don't trust myself to check it on Nov. 1st, with Cat and D's wedding going on.
By the way, if you win, all you'll pay for is the auction.  We will take care of the fuel, the gear, and the gas to get to you.
Thanks, good luck, and YAY
