Just spent a few minutes sifting through the upcoming comic releases to see if there's anything worth adding to my pull list. ... and the entire time I did this I saw nothing that stood out and nothing that was anywhere remotely original. It's all about putting out more and more of the same. It's all about the continuing glut of paper pushed out ( Read more... )

I've got to agree with you on a number of points Mike, especially your take on DC's offerings over the last year or so.

There are very few Marvel and DC titles of late which are of interest to me, as I see exactly what you mean. Aside from Daredevil, which you mentioned, there's also the excellent Captain America series (also written by Brubaker). I'm also digging Immonen's work on Ultimate Spider-Man.

They do excel at trades... DC/Vertigo's offerings all seem to benefit from this format, especially Y the Last Man and Fables, as well as Wildstorm's Ex Machina. DC's Absolute format is great, and titles like New Avengers and Mighty Avengers do benefit from the Premiere hardcover format.

Personally, I've found a fair amount of Image Comics material that is worth checking out - especially The Walking Dead and Invincible, but also The Astounding Wolf-Man, Casanova, Madman and After the Cape.

I really enjoy Y and Ex Machina as a monthly. Invicible reads well as a monthly but reads better as a trade. I picked up the first 4 trades but then went monthly. Walking Dead is a trade pickup for me.

I guess my tirade was just being fed up of practically everything from the big 2 being tied into their big events (CW or IC/52). That and the fact that so many of the spin-offs seem to be really worthless!

Hmmn...I'm not sure that I agree, guys. The deconstruction of the superhero seems to be all in vogue right now, which I think is pretty much a sign of the times. In America, obviously this inane war that we're a part of is causing a fair amount of distrust for the decision making of our government, which I think is playing out metaphorically in many of the comics storylines that we see today ( ... )

I think a lot of my personal disillusionment comes from the fact that *my* heroes just aren't acting like heroes any more. Of course I totally understand the whys and wherefores and how much it's linked to the N.A. mentality and what everyone's going through. But, to me, they should stand out like stars, not be trampled through the mud over and over and over.

I'm getting tired of "going with the grain" so to speak in watching characters I care about be completely warped and demented for the sake of the almighty dollar. I'd like to teach my kids that there's more to life than just greed and getting whatever you want at any cost to others.

I also enjoyed Morrison's Batman and really enjoy his All Star Superman, but I do find this to be the same kind of exploration of mythos that Alan Moore has been doing most of his career, most notably with Supreme. JMS lost me when he screwed Gwen Stacey's corpse over to beget Norman Osborne's quickly forgotten twins. I agree about Bendis and Daredevil, then Brubaker did the Murdock in prison story and everything is fresh again. I'll get Thor in collected form ( ... )

I guess it's just a glass half full or half empty type of thing. You both seem to really feel that the industry is betraying you for the sake of making money; I feel like nothing's changed. Like any industry, they've always been doing that to us. Welcome to American business ( ... )
