I looked back over my novels read for last year and I'm disappointed with myself, so I've made firm goals for this year. So far, I've read three books this month, which is considerably better than most months last year.

The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle: Finally! I've loved the movie ever since I first saw it on HBO back in the 80's but I never ( Read more... )

Are you trying to read the Darkover books in series chronological order? Because that is the one series I actually DON'T recommend people read in series chronological order, because Darkover Landfall is one of the weakest of the books in it. As you noticed, Stormqueen! is much better (I also very much enjoyed Hawkmistress!) but the best ones (IMO) are the ones after the rediscovery by the Terrans -- especially the Forbidden Circle duology and the three books about the Renunciates. And any book featuring Regis Hastur. And actually, even though Bradley didn't write them entirely on her own, the three featuring Marguerida Alton. :)

Not exactly. When I read Darkover Landfall, it was the only book I had in the series and I didn't know much about Darkover at that time. I wanted to read Stormqueen and Hawkmistress next since I keep hearing such great things about them both, but I never got around to Stormqueen until this year- finally. And I want to read the Renunciates this year too, but according to this site http://darkover.apiacoa.org/guide/books/subcycles.en.html it's problematic to read those before reading The Spell Sword and The Forbidden Tower. So I'm reading Hawkmistress next month, then probably Rediscovery and The Spell Sword in March, The Forbidden Tower in April, then the Renunciates for the three months after that. Then I'm not sure what order I'll read the others in.

Oh, I hope you enjoy A Fine and Private Place more than I did, whenever you come to read it. The writing was lovely and promising, but it dragged on interminably for me at points.

(I'm sorry, I followed you from the LT BookMooch forums -- I'm always curious about the LiveJournals that fellow LThingers have.)
