My roommate and I have a relatively large collection of albums on vinyl and have no way of storing/displaying them. We have them on a shelf currently but they keep sliding off from the weight. Does anyone have any ideas for ways to display them for use? We're thinking bookends or something of that sort. We'll probably head to Target tonight so ( Read more... )

um, bookend type things are good, but I would suggest some bookend that puts even pressure on the ends as to not damage the vinyl records themselves. so some kind of bookend that has a broad face to it would be perfect if you're looking to keep your vinyls in good shape.

I actually got fed up with trying to find something like that so I keep my vinyl collection in some upright magazine racks from IKEA because my audiophile friend suggested it.

happy hunting

That's a great idea to use magazine racks. We're gonna go look for some. They'd work perfectly. Maybe some of those cheapy ones and we can mount a bunch to the wall. Thanks!

My roomate has a bunch of these album frames:

and they look really cool on the wall. But buying a whole lot of them could get a little pricey.

Do you actually use the records? If not, you could tack them to your walls as a sort of album quilt. Don't put the tacks through the covers, just let the covers rest on the tacks.

Yeah, we use them so we want easy access to them. I love the album frames but we have over 60 albums and that would definitely be a bit too pricey for us. I definitely want to frame a few though!

target sells ORGANIZE-IT boxes from rubbermaid. these are particle board boxes 12" deep and 14" high and wide. they are the right size AND stackable. HOWEVER, not portable. the bottom will fall out if you grab the handles, so be careful

Not sure how large of a collection you're trying to store, but I have close to 500 records safely stored in the PORI sideboard from IKEA. It's incredibly sturdy, looks great, and the shelves are the perfect height and depth for records.

I'd stay away from anything like bookends that aren't of equal or greater size to the albums -- otherwise you're going to have major warping problems.

I second the magazine rack idea. Just whatever you do, make sure you store them upright, not flat all on top of each other like a pile, the pressure won't be good for them.
