Thanks for the comment! Do you have a pic of your kitchen?

Oh wow, very nice! I think you definitely chose the right route to go with the remake. :) As for the counter tops....I kind of like them. If they are in good shape, I'd leave them. They work well with the room imo.

I agree. I think the color still complements your design.

Thanks both my pocketbook and I agree - I work in real estate and I see people put in gorgeous bathrooms and kitchens into apartments all the time that are too good for the space.

But I totally get why they would do that. It's like an addiction...

As much as I love granite, there's no way I'd put it into my current space because of that reason. Unless for some reason I win the lottery...but even then, I'd just move rather than renovate my current kitchen! ^_^

Never would have occurred to me to paint over glass. Looks totally awesome!

It takes a lot of prep but def doable. I got a light grit scouring pad and lightly scratched all the surfaces. Then I put on primer made for glass and plastics. Then three coats of latex paint - you need that many so that the light doesn't shine through.

And I finished it all off with an eggshell spray can paint. I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out in the middle of the process but it turned out really well.

I know there's aerosol sprays of glass etching stuff that would frost the glass too - would be another alternative to painting them with a lot less work?

To the OP: Do you feel more claustrophobic cooking on the stove top now with the new microwave/hood? I keep thinking of getting one myself - but I do a lot of multiple burner cooking and am not sure of losing vertical space over the stove.

Looks great! Big fan of the low-budget upgrading.

Oh, I wish I knew that before I did all that work. Well, if you know anyone that does end up doing that, please let me know. That would have been great.

Regarding the new stove top/hood, I was worried that I would as well but it actually fits in so nicely with the rest of the kitchen that I don't mind very much.

Thanks! Yes, I've heard that 30" number a lot too but several manuals give minimums as low as 15" and people seem to be all over the map with that:

We're at 17" and so far, it's been pretty good - I kept an eye out the first time I did any cooking and such.

No problem - as it turns out, I happen to be a real estate (plus IP) attorney as well as a commercial real estate appraiser so I made sure all the requirements were met.

I'm really happy with how it turned out!

That probably took a lot of courage to paint over the glass, but it improves the look of the kitchen so much. It's impossible to have kitchen - that you actually use - with glass cabinets and have it look nice and neat.. that only looks good in the staged photo shoots for ads and such.

It's funny how the new microwave and oven really really improve the look of the kitchen! I love this story because I don't have much of a budget either and this gives me hope that small changes can make a big impact.

I was very worried about it - I did one first with the thought that maybe I'd use paint remover if it all went to hell.

My fiancee said the same thing you did; as a guy, I never really notice how much the glass made everything look cluttered. But it really does make a world of difference and the white makes the room seem brighter as well.

We did this VERY much on a budget and did most of the work ourselves. It was the microwave hood that required a professional and that wasn't that bad because we had a handyman that was experienced in doing these.

I'm shocked, it's great to see these pictures. For years I was drooling over going all-glass, but maybe that's not such a good idea after all...
