i think this might work if - you're not too heavy - your mattress isn't too heavy (like, you can't put a box spring and a regular mattress on top of crates, but you might be able to put just the regular mattress)
the big problem you'll have is crates don't have a lot of support in their middles so if you sit or lay down too hard on the center of a single crate, you're likely to bend the wood or split it. you might be able to use plastic milk crates too if they're the heavy kind that actually carry milk around rather than the cheap kind that wal mart sells to people to stack up for book shelves.
hmm.. I only have a regular matress. I was talking about the plastic crates.. I do agree with the heavy kind though. I'll have to look around for those. I might try something else. I'm just sick of the big slope in my bed and all of that ugly metal. I'm kind of heavy so that might be a problem, but I won't sleep in the often.
I've known a couple people that did this with heavy-duty milk crates (the kind with the metal reinforcements) and a large piece of plywood under the mattress. It's not exactly the most sturdy or stable setup, but it can be done.
i've had a few friends use regular plastic milk crates to raise their beds off the floor. you just have to use enough milk crates to cover the entire surface area of the bed (one friend had a queen size bed with a box spring, the other had a single bed - don't know about the box spring). you may want to wire each crate to the next to prevent slipping.
if it really is temporary [i'm not sure how long before you move] maybe just put the mattress on the floor?
i've certainly heard of the crates + plywood trick, but i'm sure you could get an additional row of crates for down the middle. and i'd probably put a standard bed skirt over it, so you can hide the crates, as you would over the box spring. and yes, get the metal milk crates.
i guess it depends what you want to end up with, more crates or a big piece of ply...
