There are things Sakura wants to say to Naruto that she knows she may never say.
She wants to say she's sorry for misjudging him. She wants to say that she understands now, a little bit. She wants to say she's sorry for making him take the bigger portion of the burden. She wants to say that she knows he gets depressed sometimes, she can see it in his eyes before he smiles, and that she also gets depressed, and that it's alright, they don't have to hide their loneliness from each other anymore. She wants to say that they are still a team.
One night, on the road, she hears him wake up near midnight. "Are you alright?" she asks uselessly, kneeling at his side.
Naruto shakes his head. His nose is running and he is fighting back tears.
"I can't... I can't even save him in my dreams."
Tears spring to Sakura's eyes. She blinks them back and takes Naruto's hands in hers, not knowing that it will do any good.
"I know," she says. "I know. Neither can I."
(After writing this, I realized... okay, anyone here read Magic Knight Rayearth? You know that scene at the end of Vol. 3, where they're all hugging each other and crying and screaming "it's not fair"? That's basically what I want Sakura and Naruto to do at some point in the manga.)
