I used to think that about Phoebus/Esmerelda, too! (the they're-together-cause-they're-so-pretty) (and I still do, a little bit) however, it wouldn't have made sense in the movie with the way all the scenes were laid out. it's really clear that Esmerelda is really interested in Phoebus - even before the movie's halfway done.

(I agree with everything! Except re: the primarily white Disney females. Strong female characters are excellent, yes, and I will never, ever dispute that, but when the default is "white female," something needs to be addressed.)
